The use of artificial intelligence to forecast crime has come under withering criticism, including charges that it recapitulates racially biased patterns of policing; that it unfairly burdens marginalized communities; or that it infringes the liberty of targeted communities. In this three-year NSF-funded project (award #1917707), ethicists at Cal Poly and the University of Florida will examine these claims and develop best practices for the development and deployment of algorithmic policing programs. When it comes to developing ethically sensitive technologies, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
