We
want you! Here are five good reasons to join our group:
1. Your Research. Let's face it: the teacher-scholar model is a
worthy ideal, but it takes much effort to fit in quality research time
into our busy schedules. With tight university budgets, release time from
teaching is difficult to come by. Therefore, we are taking a proactive
approach by seeking outside funding (e.g., grants) for our work—providing
you with release time or added compensation.
2. Tech Ethics is on the Rise. Speaking of funding, more
opportunities are appearing for investigations in science & society (or,
loosely, technology ethics). While still competitive, they are relatively
"green fields" and receptive to imaginative proposals.
3. Leverages Our Strengths. More than a top-ranked university, Cal
Poly is one of the few institutions—if not the only one—with strengths in
such diverse areas of science and technology as robotics, computer
science, engineering, aerospace, nanotechnology, agriculture, and more.
4. Building Bridges. University departments typically don't
interact much with each other, yet everyone understands the importance of
interdisciplinary work. Our collaborative work not only helps to fulfill
Cal Poly's goals in promoting a well-rounded education but also creates
new relationships among departments (and outside industry) to capitalize
on new opportunities.
5. There's Something for Everyone. The projects we have underway
include work in nanotechnology, robotics, and human enhancement; but we
are looking to be involved in other areas, such as virtual reality, space
policy, bioengineered foods, artificial intelligence neuroscience, and
more. We are interested in the full range of issues, not just "ethics" as
traditionally defined but also work related to sociology, anthropology,
psychology, communications, business, political science, law,
education—you name it. |

Propose a Project
In addition to the
grants we have already won, we have other grant proposals in progress or
under consideration. Please join us for future proposals! We are
especially interested in subject-matter experts in privacy,
genetically-modified foods, space technologies, and other areas. Or if we
haven't yet mentioned your area of interest, just let us know what you
have in mind for a project.
